Winsport Delays Opening

• When: Oct 16
• Details: Winsport has announced that their opening date is now uncertain due to the water main repair work scheduled for November and lasting four weeks. Originally, they planned an opening date of November 4. My own take is that unless we see extreme snowfall, I wouldn't be surprised if opening is pushed back into mid or late December to give them time to make enough snow for a solid base. That said, it's possible they will be able to make snow in one section, say one of the terrain parks, and open just that much closer to the original date. I don't think this is catastrophic, but it is disappointing for anyone who was planning to warm up on the big hill at winsport with their free day from the supercard.

Griff's Winter Gear Sale

• Where: Lake Louise
• When: November 6 - 8
• Details: Used gear sale at Lake Louise, much smaller and quieter than ski swap. Worth checking out if you're picking up your pass or in the area, but maybe not worth the drive from Calgary just to check out.

Ski Swap

• Where: Ski Swap at the Chief Jim Starlight Centre
• When: October 23 - 25
• Details: An annual tradition and the largest ski sale in Canada, ski swap (whose government name is the Calgary New & Used Ski Sale) has a new location this year at the Chief Jim Starlight Centre. I really like the new location, and I think this will be a much better than Max Bell. My advice for beginners is to only get skis if you have someone somewhat knowledgeable (that you trust) to help you. I'd genuinely tell them your budget and let them pick. Otherwise I don't think ski swap is the best option for a beginner going on their own. I would say that if you can’t date the bindings yourself you probably don’t know enough yet to pick well. I'm a huge believer in the idea that beginner gear exists for a reason, and that way more people are disadvantaged by getting gear that is too advanced than vice versa. More advanced gear is almost always better for a specific preference or terrain not just a blanket “better at everything”. Boots can be their own hell and I really think that ski swap is not the place for someone to get their first boots. It’s just not a conducive environment to getting the fit right. Poles and accessories are probably the best deals and I can recommend shopping them to anyone of any skill level especially if you aren’t picky about colours or patterns.

• Details: Most resorts still have early bird pricing until mid-October so if you're on the fence make your choice soon!

Supplemental Details

The price for supercards is the lowest that I can find, usually that is at AMA. The calculator uses the Day Price (Resort) from the table which is a standard weekend ticket to determine super card discounts. If you're planning your whole season's costs, remember that the day rate can change throughout the season which may affect your overall cost.
